Dear Church family, This weekend the nation takes its annual pause for the Super Bowl. The hoopla continues to grow each year and even those not so interested in football tune in, if only to see the commercials. It strikes me that sports may provide more opportunity to transcend our divisions than almost any other activity. Each team has fans who I suspect have dramatically different views about the polarized direction of the country, yet who come together to paint their faces and bring out all their paraphernalia to root for “their” team. Perhaps we need this pause to come together on an outcome that matters only peripherally. Being a Philadelphia native, I’ll probably be rooting for the Eagles, but I like the Chiefs, too, and wouldn’t be terribly upset if they won the three-peat. We focus on the topic of “confession of sin” on Sunday. The texts are Isaiah 6:1-8 and Luke 5: 1-11. The sermon is “God’s Great Reassurance. Perhaps you were touched as I was by the poignancy of the prayer request last Sunday. It was a reminder that political decisions have human impact. As a church we’ll want to find ways to support each other in an unsettled time.
