Dear Church Family, Lent began yesterday with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Lent is a 40-day (plus 6 Sundays) period of spiritual preparation for the celebration of Easter. The tradition has deep roots going back to the apostolic period. It was formalized in the church year in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea . (which also formalized the doctrine of the Trinity) It is traditionally understood as a period of penitence and reflection on the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice. Consistent with Jesus’ own period of fasting prior to beginning his ministry, Lent for many is a time of “giving up” something, perhaps chocolate, or alcohol, or electronic devices. For others, Lent is a time of “taking on” a spiritual practice such as reading of scripture, visiting the homebound, or engaging in acts of compassion and care. There are numerous free devotional resources available online. The liturgical color for the season of Lent is purple, and I would invite you to wear purple on Sunday. The sermon for Sunday is “The Trouble with Temptation” and the texts are Deuteronomy 26:1-11 and Matthew 4:1-11. Do not forget Sunday begins Daylight Savings Time. “Spring forward” and set your clocks ahead an hour. See you in church. Rich
